As Regional Vice President (Caribbean) of the Commonwealth Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association (CMJA) it is my pleasant responsibility to welcome you all to Bermuda for this important conference. We shall have a rare opportunity to explore a subject, ‘Equality in the Courts: the Commonwealth experience’, which is central to the quality of justice in all jurisdictions. We shall have the advantage of bringing together experienced legal minds from many parts of the world – your minds – and together I am sure we shall be able to increase our understanding of the complex issues involved.

I hope that you will be able to take the time to explore and enjoy what we have to offer on our beautiful island, and that this will make your visit personally memorable as well as intellectually stimulating. From a legal point of view, Bermuda is fascinating: its English legal structure has been translated into a sophisticated local jurisdiction with significant responsibilities in both civil and criminal law, and all of this is set within a parliamentary system of government which is the oldest outside Westminster.
